So far I have let go a lot of my possessions which was hard for me to do and I imagine its hard for a lot of other people to do to - so I decided to write down troubles I ran into when attempting to get rid of physical objects in my life and post them on the internet so it can maybe even help some other people on the net.
The first thing I had issues with was putting off cleaning up - for YEARS I avoided cleaning up things in my life because I didn't want to admit to myself that I may have not been doing the best job in certain areas of my life. It took me a while to see that the original problems of being messy was just getting worse by avoiding it and a whole new regime of new problems were manifesting them selfs as I waited. My post for today will be about the first of those problems.
A issue that came up after waiting for so long is that it became overwhelming; just looking at the mess was a task and then I started to think about how I was going to deal with it and that just made me want to avoid it more which I did for a while. Than I developed dual strategies to overcome the overwhelming-ness of the project which I rotated using when the other stopped being effective.
Strategy #1: Just Do It,
I didn't think about the large task at hand; I just started working through it with out any thought of it, the issue with using this strategy alone is that your just avoiding thinking about the task at hand again so this strategy could loose effectiveness extremely fast thats why its a good to combine it with
Strategy #2: Break it down into small, manageable tasks,
Clean up 5 pieces of trash a day or clean up so you can see at least one more square foot of floor each day. Either of those things may not sound like a lot but if you do them at least you have gotten that much done compared to nothing done. If you use this strategy alone you may run into the problem of over analyzing each task so remember to practice the first strategy when this is happening to you. Also remember that each "five pieces of trash" you get rid of now is 5 less that your avoiding dealing with - once they are gone they are gone and you don't have to deal with them any more.
